Motorists who are careless put riders in danger. We can do better for our children by not driving aggressively, watching for upcoming school zones and not texting and driving while focusing on the road.

Obeying all traffic lights and signals can help avoid an accident. Did you know that the danger zone is 10 feet around the school bus from loading and unloading students? Meaning that motorists should stop 10 feet from the loading zone when a school bus has its lights flashing and at a complete stop. By doing this we can help avoid accidents each year at the school bus stop.

They get nights, weekends, and holidays off, they make a positive impact on their community and they have a flexible work schedule (just to name a few). Aside from those benefits that motivate great school bus drivers, they also have these other qualities in common:
• Personable and good with kids
• Calm under pressure
• Dedicated to their profession
• Likes to be part of a team

Make school bus transportation safer for everyone by following these practices:
• When backing out of a driveway or leaving a garage, watch out for children walking or bicycling to school.
• When driving in neighborhoods and in school zones, watch out for students who may be walking.
• Slow down. Watch for children walking in the street, especially if there are no sidewalks in neighborhood.
• Be alert. Children arriving late for the bus may dart into the street without looking for traffic.
• Learn and obey the school bus laws in your state, as well as the ""flashing signal light system"" that school bus drivers use to alert motorists of pending actions:
o Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Motorists should slow down and prepare to stop their vehicles.
o Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off. Motorists must stop their cars and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before they can start driving again.
